It is important to focus on expertise regarding product design here. If the designer has expertise in the domain of engineering, too, that’s even better. It might only be required if the design is an extremely challenging one and therefore requires expertise regarding tool development, though.

Whoever the designer will be, he will rely on a quality brief. One that, ideally, covers all of the following aspects:

  • brand visuals: logo, colors, font and guidelines on how these need to be used
  • a description of the brand “personality”: what the brand is about, what it stands for, what it represents
  • brand tone of voice
  • a description of the target audience
  • images of already made branded merchandise, e.g. bottle openers
  • distribution channel: it makes a big difference if the bottle opener will be part of a direct mailing campaign and you have certain limitations regarding weight and thickness, so that the item fits into a particular type of envelope, or if the item will e.g. be distributed, as a giveaway, during a sports event
  • timeline: if you only have two to three instead of five to six months of time, the designer and whoever will be sourcing the product need to know this
  • budget
  • packaging
